Corneal Transplant

Corneal Transplant in India

Corneal transplant or corneal grafting is a surgical procedure. In Corneal transplant, doctors replace damaged cornea part from donors’ corneal tissue. Corneal transplant helps to restore eye vision, reduce pain, and can improve the appearance of damaged cornea.

Corneal transplant can be done in two ways:

  • By replacing entire cornea, which is called penetrating keratoplasty.
  • By replacing only a part of cornea, which is called lamellar keratoplasty.

Preparations Before Corneal Transplant

Before corneal transplant surgery, doctor will do a through examination to check if they can do the transplant surgery or not.

A thorough eye examination - Doctor will do a thorough examination of your eye to check current condition of eye and whether corneal transplant surgery can be done or not. Also, doctor will determine the size of cornea you need.

Review of medications you are going through - Your doctor will check all the medications you are on and based on the result, he will take further decisions.

Treatment of other eye related problems - Other problems like any type of infection or inflammation can decrease the chance of a successful corneal transplant. Such types of issues will be treated first.

Before the procedure

On the day of your cornea transplant doctor will ask you to keep relax. Sometimes doctor might give you some sedative to help you to relax and a local anesthesia to numb your eye. After that doctor will do surgery on one eye at a time.

After the procedure

Once cornea transplant is done, doctor will give you eye drops and few oral medications immediately after the surgery. These medications will help in the recovery of your eye and will help to keep your eyes safe from the infection, swelling and pain. These medications will also help prevent cornea rejection.

Once surgery is done, initially your vision will be worse than before. This is because your eyes will be adjusting to the new cornea. It can take few months for your vision to improve.

Success Rate, Sign And Symptoms of Cornea Rejection

Success Rate - Success rate of cornea transplant is high but sometimes there can be a small risk of complications, such as:

  • Rejection of donor cornea.
  • Infection in eye.
  • Increase of pressure within the eyeball.
  • Donor cornea might get rejected.
  • Bleeding in eye
  • Swelling or retinal detachment issue.
  • Issue with the used stiches.

Sign And Symptoms of Cornea Rejection

Once surgery is done, we need to keep tracking whether your body accepted new cornea or not and whether your eye is recovering or not. Your doctor will do thorough check-up before taking cornea from the donor and chances of cornea rejection is very low. But still, sometimes by mistake your body’s immunity can attack the transplanted cornea. This is called cornea rejection.

If your body’s immunity will reject transplanted Cornea, then it might require medical treatment and another corneal transplantation needs to be done.

Patient needs to be cautious and keep tracking symptoms of rejection like:

  • Vision loss
  • Pain in eye
  • High sensitivity to light
  • Redness in eye
